How Nellie and Elvis Help Me Find Joy in Stressful Times

As #StressAwarenessWeek wraps up, I’ve been reflecting on the little things that bring happiness during tough times. For me, that joy often comes in the form of my two dogs, Elvis and Nellie. They’re more than just pets – they’re family, and their companionship is a powerful reminder of resilience and joy, even in stressful times.

Elvis joined our family in June 2023 as a rescue hound from Cyprus, a bit of a silly boy with a huge soppy heart – he just wants cuddles…even though he stinks! Elvis quickly became best mates with Hattie, our wonderdog, and they were inseparable (even if Hattie could be a bit ‘too cool for school’ with him).

When we went on holiday in September, Hattie wasn’t well, so she stayed with my in-laws while Elvis went to a friend’s house to enjoy the company of two other dogs. Heartbreakingly, Hattie passed away while we were away, and Elvis never got to say goodbye. He misses her deeply, and we all felt the emptiness that her absence left.

In our grief, we brought home a new addition, Nellie, a lovely Labrador puppy who joined us just as we were coming to terms with losing Hattie. Nellie has been an absolute ray of sunshine, bringing joy and laughter back to our home when we needed it most. She and Elvis are now firm friends, and their antics have helped us move forward (even though Elvis can be a bit ‘too cool for school’ with her now!). There’s something about the energy, curiosity and innocence of a young puppy and the companionship of a loyal rescue that fills our days with warmth and happiness.

Research shows that pets can significantly reduce stress

Studies by the Mental Health Foundation showed that 87% of pet owners feel their animals help them manage stress. The companionship they provide isn’t just about reducing anxiety – it’s about creating moments of pure happiness. For me, seeing Elvis play with Nellie or just having them both by my side has been a reminder of the simple pleasures we can hold onto during life’s more challenging moments.

How can pets help us manage stress?

Pets offer a unique form of stress relief, one that doesn’t require effort or planning. They give unconditional love, and their simple approach to life reminds us to stay present.

Here’s what I’ve learned from Nellie and Elvis:

  1. Unconditional Companionship: Pets are there through the good and the bad, and that consistent companionship can be a great source of comfort.  They don’t care about any life’s nonsense; they just think you’re awesome.
  2. Encouragement to Play and Relax: Watching them play reminds me to take life a bit less seriously, to unwind, and to let go of daily pressures, even if just for a few minutes. Since becoming a dog owner, I’ve been outside in nature everyday which has had a fantastic influence on my mental health.
  3. Support Through Grief and Joy: Losing Hattie was tough, but having Elvis and now Nellie has helped us cope. Their presence is a gentle reminder of the importance of living in the moment and, of course, that all things must pass – it’s going to be OK.

Let’s Talk
