It’s International Men’s Day, a day that often gets misunderstood
It’s not just about celebrating men; it’s about shining a light on the challenges they face, the contributions they make, and the support they need. This year’s theme is all about promoting positive role models and raising awareness of men’s mental health—topics that are often overlooked or dismissed.
Men’s mental health is a subject that doesn’t get nearly enough attention…yet
We often hear phrases like “man up” or “just get on with it,” which reinforce a culture where men feel they can’t ask for help. I’ve seen this in my own life—friends, colleagues, and even myself at times, brushing off struggles because it felt like the “strong” thing to do. But strength isn’t about enduring silently; it’s about recognising when you need help and having the courage to ask for it.
The statistics are staggering…
According to the Office for National Statistics, in the UK, 75% of all suicides are men. Many of these deaths are linked to untreated mental health issues, isolation, and societal pressures to conform to traditional ideas of masculinity. It’s a sobering reminder that we need to create spaces where men feel safe to be vulnerable and supported.
How can we support men’s mental health and wellbeing?
International Men’s Day is an opportunity to foster conversations and take action. Here are a few ways we can all help:
- Normalise Conversations About Mental Health: Encouraging men to talk openly about their feelings and challenges is a vital step in breaking down stigma. Sometimes, just asking “How are you really doing?” can open the door to meaningful dialogue.
- Challenge Gender Stereotypes: Let’s move away from outdated ideas of what it means to be a man. Strength comes in many forms, and vulnerability is one of them. It’s getting better – I have never seen, heard or experienced an instance of a genuine and heartfelt disclosure of poor mental health be met with a dismissive response. Everyone has got a story!
- Celebrate Positive Role Models: Highlight men who inspire, support others, and challenge the status quo. Role models can show that it’s okay to be authentic, compassionate, and human.
- Promote Resources and Support Networks: Share information about mental health resources, local groups, or even helplines like CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) or Mind.
- Create Spaces for Connection: Whether it’s at work, in communities, or within families, fostering environments where men can connect and share experiences can make a huge difference.
