Today is International Volunteers Day
It’s a chance to celebrate the quiet heroes who give their time, energy, and hearts to support others. For me, this day holds special meaning as my step-dad is currently receiving care at a Sue Ryder hospice. Every day, I witness the impact of compassionate, dedicated volunteers who help create a sense of comfort and dignity during the most challenging times.
Volunteers are often the unseen threads holding so much together. At Sue Ryder, they’re the warm smiles, the cups of tea delivered with care, the helping hands that make sure families feel supported. Their work is proof that small acts of kindness can make an immeasurable difference.
I’ve seen volunteers at Sue Ryder do everything…
…from running errands to simply sitting and chatting with patients or families who need a moment of connection. It’s not about grand gestures – it’s about being present. One particular moment stands out: a volunteer brought my Step-Dad a cup of tea (very important to him), unprompted, just because they’d overheard a conversation about what he liked. That kind of thoughtfulness stays with you.
Charities like Sue Ryder rely on volunteers to provide the kind of care that goes beyond the clinical.
According to Volunteer Scotland, over 70% of hospices in the UK depend on volunteers to keep their services running. From offering companionship to supporting fundraising efforts, their contributions ensure that places like Sue Ryder can continue to deliver holistic, compassionate care.
How can we celebrate and support volunteers?
Volunteers are the heart of organisations like Sue Ryder. Here are a few ways we can honour their efforts and ensure their work continues:
- Show Appreciation: A simple “thank you” can go a long way. Let volunteers know their time and effort are valued and recognised.
- Support Charities: Whether it’s donating to organisations like Sue Ryder or attending their events, every bit helps sustain their services.
- Spread Awareness: Share stories about the impact of volunteering and encourage others to get involved.
- Consider Volunteering Yourself: If you’ve ever thought about giving back, why not take the first step today? Even a few hours can make a huge difference.
- Advocate for Volunteers: Push for better support and recognition for volunteers at a policy level, ensuring their contributions are always acknowledged.
