Feel Good Works

Congrats on Your New Ping Pong Table…Now Get Back to Your 80-Hour Workweek!

Ah, workplace wellbeing initiatives – corporate leaders love them. They’re like kale smoothies for your business: they look healthy, they feel virtuous, but when done wrong, they’re just a bitter mess nobody asked for.

Take the ping pong table. A classic. It sits there in the corner of your office, proudly declaring, “We care about your mental health. Please, come here, swat a plastic ball around for five minutes, and then kindly return to crushing your soul under the weight of impossible deadlines.”

This is the kind of “wellbeing initiative” that some businesses think employees want. But, spoiler alert: no one was lying awake at 3 a.m. thinking, “If only my workplace had table football, all my stress would melt away.”

Meanwhile, Dave in accounts hasn’t taken a lunch break since 2019, the IT team hasn’t seen sunlight in six months and are running out of coffee and Red Bull, and HR is one passive-aggressive email away from staging a coup….but, at least you can all play table tennis in between panic attacks, right?

Here’s the Thing:

True workplace wellbeing isn’t about shiny distractions or free snacks (though, let’s be real, we’d all take the snacks). It’s about creating a culture where employees feel valued, supported, and, dare I say it, human.

That means realistic workloads, access to mental health support, and managers who understand that “urgent” doesn’t mean “drop everything and destroy your personal life.” It means asking your staff what they actually need, instead of assuming everyone’s stress can be solved with a beanbag chair and a subscription to Calm.

But Wait, There’s More!

The real kicker is when companies roll out these initiatives and then actively sabotage them. “We care about your work-life balance,” they say, before scheduling a team bonding event at 8 p.m. on a Thursday. Because nothing says “we value your personal time” like mandatory karaoke night during your kid’s school play.

So here’s my plea to organisations everywhere: wellbeing is central to your business operations and not a tick-box exercise. Token gestures amount to pouring time and money down the drain – wellbeing strategies are not a cost, they’re an investment.

Because here’s the truth: You can’t ping pong your way out of toxic workplace culture. But you can start fixing it—with meaningful change, genuine care, and maybe, just maybe, by letting Dave eat his lunch in peace.

Bon appetit, Dave!
