Over Half of Gen Z NHS Staff Are Falling Ill from Work Stress – Can We Afford to Ignore It?

A recent analysis of NHS staff surveys reveals a concerning trend: over half (52%) of Generation Z NHS staff, aged 21 to 30, reported work-related stress-induced illness in the past year, up from 38% in 2013.

The escalating stress levels among young NHS professionals not only jeopardise their health but also threaten the sustainability of healthcare services. High stress can lead to burnout, increased absenteeism, and higher staff turnover, compromising patient care quality.

Consider a young nurse starting her career, eager to make a difference. Facing relentless workloads, extended shifts, and emotional strain, she begins experiencing anxiety and fatigue. Without adequate support, she may contemplate leaving the profession, a loss both to her and the NHS.

Where Has This Happened?

The Nuffield Trust’s analysis of the 2023 NHS England Staff Survey highlights:

Increased Stress: 52% of Gen Z staff reported stress-induced illness, a 14% rise from 2013.

Dissatisfaction with Pay: Dissatisfaction among this group doubled from 10% to 22% over the decade.

Reduced Job Enthusiasm: 15% rarely or never looked forward to work, up from previous years.

In contrast, older staff (51-65) reported a slight decrease in stress-related illness, from 43% to 40%.

How Can We Implement Change?

To address this pressing issue:

  1. Enhance Mental Health Support: Implement comprehensive mental health programs, including counselling and peer support, to help staff manage stress.
  2. Promote Work-Life Balance: Offer flexible working arrangements and ensure manageable workloads to prevent burnout.
  3. Foster Open Communication: Encourage a culture where staff can voice concerns without fear, leading to timely interventions.
  4. Provide Career Development Opportunities: Invest in mentoring and training to boost job satisfaction and retention.
