Wellbeing Lessons from the Year of the Snake

Wellbeing Wisdom for the Lunar New Year

As we step into the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Snake, it’s a time to reflect on the powerful symbolism this animal brings: wisdom, intuition, and transformation. In Chinese culture, the snake is a guide for growth and renewal, offering lessons that align beautifully with workplace wellbeing.

What if we could channel the snake’s qualities to transform our organisations and create spaces where wisdom and adaptability thrive?

In many workplaces, change can feel like a source of stress rather than a pathway to growth. Teams may resist transformation, favouring old habits over new opportunities. Yet, the snake teaches us that growth comes from letting go of what no longer serves us – just as it sheds its skin.

I’m reminded of an organisation I worked with during a merger.

The change was overwhelming, and stress levels were high. Even though the merging companies operated in the same industry, they had completely different cultures.  One had a very ‘laissez-faire’ culture, they got out of people’s way and let them do the work.  The other had very strict rules and regulations for people to slot into without deviation. By focusing on open communication and fostering adaptability, the team embraced transformation as an opportunity rather than a threat. Like the snake, they shed their fear of change and emerged stronger and more cohesive.

Research supports the power of transformation in organisations.

A study in the Journal of Organisational Change Management found that teams with high adaptability experience 33% less stress and 27% greater engagement during times of change. Cultivating resilience and intuition makes a tangible difference.

Here are three lessons from the Year of the Snake to foster wisdom, intuition, and transformation in your workplace:

Imagine your workplace as a forest where the snake thrives; constantly evolving, shedding, and adapting. Each change brings growth, strength, and wisdom to the entire ecosystem.

  1. Embrace Renewal: Encourage teams to regularly reflect on old practices. What’s working? What needs to change? Celebrate letting go of outdated habits to make way for innovation.
  2. Trust Intuition: Create a culture where intuition and creativity are valued. Allow space for ideas to flow, even when they challenge the norm.
  3. Lead with Wisdom: Like the snake’s calm and analytical nature, leaders should model thoughtful decision-making, especially during times of uncertainty.
