Objection No. 10: “Wellbeing? Not really my area of expertise – or interest, for that matter!”

“Not really my area of expertise – or interest, for that matter.”

I have heard this objection, as recently as this week, especially from leaders whose roles don’t directly focus on people management or HR. It’s easy to see wellbeing as someone else’s responsibility, especially if it doesn’t seem relevant to your day-to-day tasks. But in reality, wellbeing is everyone’s business. It impacts every area of an organisation, from productivity and performance to morale and retention.

I worked with a team in finance, where leaders were mainly focused on data and deliverables. If wellbeing issues – like high stress or burnout – start affecting that team, productivity drops, mistakes are made, and turnover increases. A “not my area” mindset can lead to missed warning signs until these issues become a problem. In contrast, leaders who recognise the value of wellbeing, even if it’s not their primary focus, can help create a culture where everyone feels supported and performs at their best.

Where has this happened?
Research from Deloitte (2022) shows that companies with leadership involvement across departments in wellbeing initiatives saw a 27% reduction in absenteeism and a significant improvement in employee engagement. When every part of the organisation sees wellbeing as integral—not just “for HR”—the benefits reach every team, from tech to finance to frontline operations.

How can we make wellbeing relevant for everyone?
Even if wellbeing isn’t your core responsibility, small changes in leadership approach can make a big difference. For example, incorporating regular check-ins, supporting mental health days, or simply being mindful of stressors within the team shows employees that their wellbeing matters. This isn’t about becoming an expert in wellbeing—it’s about recognising that a healthy, engaged workforce benefits every area of the business.

Let’s talk…
If wellbeing doesn’t feel relevant, let’s explore simple, practical ways to make it accessible and impactful, no matter your role. Together, we can encourage a culture where wellbeing is seen as essential across the board, making everyone’s work a little easier – and more productive – in the process.
